Cross Docking
Cross docking involves moving freight from one trailer or train car to another outbound truck for the next leg of its journey. In the LTL Freight market, cross docking is used quite frequently. Cross docking facilities do provide opportunities to lower freight costs because loads can be reassembled to match destinations of the trucks along the way.
Pros & Cons
The big advantage to shippers and receivers is that cross docking can streamline the trip insuring that cargo is delivered quickly, warehouse costs are eliminated and freight is delivered quickly. The disadvantage is that the additional handling of freight can create opportunities for damage and adequate tracking systems must be in place to handle the transfers.
