A “bill of lading” is basically a receipt from the shipper of goods (you) provided to the carrier (trucking, railroad, ship or air freighter) that is then in turn signed by the receiver upon delivery.  It is designed to protect the shipper, carrier, and receiver of freight being transported.  This document serves several purposes including a guarantee of payment to the shipper, custodial possession by the shipper and proof of receipt.
